Tencent EdgeOne - Product Manager

EdgeOne is Tencent Cloud’s security and site acceleration solution for the global market built on Tencent’s edge node network. Using Tencent EdgeOne (TEO), your site will have protection against threats, such as DDoS attacks, bots, and other web attacks, while also delivering content quickly to your end users via EdgeOne’s CDN platform.

Acceleration: TEO edge nodes are located close to end users, which greatly reduces latency and packet loss, avoids network jitters, and guarantees stability and performance during content delivery to a global audience. In addition, EdgeOne has many built-in features, including cache pre-fetching, file compression, image optimization, cross-border acceleration, and smart route optimization, to efficiently support performance-sensitive applications.

Security: Security protection services such as WAF and Anti-DDoS are available in TEO. Edge nodes identify and block various layer-3/4/7 attack requests, cleanse DDoS attack traffic, and utilize a smart AI and bot policy engine to analyze the behaviors of web, bot, and CC attacks and update attack blocking policies. This prevents malicious requests from reaching your origin servers and guarantees availability and performance for your business.

EdgeOne is part of Tencent Cloud’s suite of public cloud services. For more information, see the full list of Tencent Cloud products and services here.

When should I use EdgeOne?

EdgeOne can be used in a wide variety of scenarios, but the most common theme is delivering your content to your end users securely, quickly, and at scale. Now, this can seem a bit vague, so let’s dive into a few examples.

End Users are Far Away from the Origin

Let’s pretend that your origin (where you store the files, images, video, etc. that end users will download to their devices) is located in Silicon Valley. But you find that most of your end users are based on the US East Coast. As a result, users complain that your website is slow, and user engagement declines.

One option is to create a duplicate origin on the East Coast, but this will likely be costly and time-consuming to do. A better option is to use EdgeOne’s CDN platform. With EdgeOne, users will connect to a nearby caching node instead of connecting to their origin thousands of miles away, thereby dramatically improving download speeds and reliability.

Flash Crowds

Sometimes your site may encounter an unexpected surge in traffic. Whether the increased demand is expected or not, your site has to scale accordingly to accommodate the traffic influx. Traditionally, this meant horizontal scaling either in your data centers or in the public cloud. But even with features such as auto-scaling, virtual machines aren’t designed to cache content. So networking costs can skyrocket as a result.

EdgeOne’s architecture includes thousands of nodes around the world. They are strategically placed in locations close to end users with large amounts of connectivity to ISPs. On top of that, their built-in caching functions ensure that pulls to the origin are kept to a minimum, reducing networking costs and improving client-side performance.

Custom Business Logic

Back in the day, static sites were, well, static. Every person viewing your site received the same content no matter what device they were using or where they were located in the world. Times have changed since then, and dynamic content is now the norm. Content is tailored for each person on-the-fly. To do this, you can use EdgeOne’s Edge Functions to write your custom business logic and run it on a serverless architecture.

EdgeOne Edge Functions run on the same nodes as the EdgeOne CDN. This design gives you the ability to dynamically alter HTTP requests and responses to and from the EdgeOne CDN, respectively.

Cross-Border Traffic Acceleration

One of EdgeOne’s most exciting features is its ability to send traffic to and from China mainland without experiencing the high latency and congestion that is common with other network providers. This is particularly useful for applications in which content is hosted outside of mainland China but end users are located behind the border. EdgeOne’s cross-border acceleration feature can ensure that these end users experience fast webpage load times despite long network distances.

There are many more use cases you can utilize EdgeOne. Please feel free to check out all EdgeOne features on the Tencent Cloud website.
